John C. Lloyd papers, 1824-1861.

The collection consists of the dockets, account books, and daybooks of John C. Lloyd used during his term as Justice of the Peace for Essex County and in his tailoring business in Belleville, New Jersey. The collection also contains a subscription list to various periodicals dating from 1845-1860. The papers contain three volumes of John C. Lloyd's docket, dating from 1833-1839, 1839-1851, and 1851-1855 respectively, which largely deal with debt cases. There are three record books that document the business transactions of Lloyd's tailoring business in Belleville, including tasks such as making, mending, or trimming coats, shirts, and pants.

John C. Lloyd (1796-1881), originally from Erie, Pennsylvania moved to Belleville, New Jersey with his young son, Aaron (1817-1905). He opened a tailor shop on Main Street in Belleville, and later was a Justice of Peace for Essex County (1833-1855) and a member of the Belleville Town Committee (1839). On May 19, 1824, John C. Lloyd married Belleville resident Harriet Joralemon, the daughter of Abraham Joralemon, who was presumably his second wife. From the description of John C. Lloy...
